Working Lady Style

August 28, 2013 § 1 Comment

IMG_9700So I’m going to throw it out there that I know this outfit looks super weird when not on a body, as shown above. The proportions seem totally out of whack. But I’m hoping you’ll trust me on this… it’s a good look.

We all know my love for glitter as a statement piece for work outfits, and this outfit is no exception.

The components:

The jacket is from Banana Republic Outlet and is kind of a tuxedo style, with silver beading along the edges of the lapels. It’s a cropped, 3/4 length sleeve jacket. So it can’t be worn with just any shirt/pant combination. But when worn with the right items, it is a ton of fun.

IMG_9721The shirt is a great silk, beaded top from Anthro. For the first year I had it, I thought it wasn’t work appropriate because the fabric doesn’t go all the way to your underarms, leaving lots of bared skin when paired with a cardigan. Plus, it is super long, which is a little less formal than needed in my office. But, one day, I looked at it differently and realized that with some creative tweaking, it just might work. And it did! I wear it tucked in and then a little loose, muffin-top-like, to add some visibility to the shirt between the cropped jacket and the pant. I like the silver and gold combo you get from the pairing of this with the tuxedo jacket.

IMG_9708The pants are a classic black wool cropped pant from J. Crew Factory. These are a huge staple in my wardrobe. The beauty of the cropped pant is they can be worn with flats, heels or wedges! For a short one like me, this is a huge plus!

The shoes are Jessica Simpson. And honestly, I can only wear them on days I’m not doing much walking, and the walking I’m doing is on carpet or a rubber floor (why aren’t there more of these in the workplace????). But I love to look at them. I am a s.u.c.k.e.r. for suede shoes. Just off the top of my head, I have six pairs. It’s a problem.

Most of these accessories have made appearances before, but I think they add a nice touch to this look as well. The belt and earrings are from J. Crew Factory and the watch is Michael Kors.

My sister just moved to Atlanta, so I am hoping she can help me transition this series into some actual photos with bodies in the clothes so you can see everything how it really looks. I think that will especially help with these cropped pant looks that seem so strange without a human.

But the biggest thing to take away from this look is to think creatively about items in your closet that you have mentally classified as evening/weekend clothes. With a little tweaking, they may prove to work with your working wardrobe, opening up several new outfits to you without ever having to go shopping!

Let’s Make Habits

It is so funny how just having some accountability {read: worrying you’re going to fail and this time, someone’s going to know about it, which we just can’t have} is so motivating when it comes to achieving our goals.

My goal was to read my Bible every night and write in my journal five times a week. I read my Bible six nights last week and wrote in my journal five times!!

I’m still getting the hang of finding my journaling style. But thanks to some recommendations from fellow journalers, I have decided to write to God. And I am feeling much more comfortable now.

If I’m being honest, many nights, the only reason I wrote was because I knew I was going to have to write this blog post. And I guess that’s the point, right? I’m hoping that as the time goes on, the motivation will begin to come from within. I am thinking I might need to put a few more boundaries in place in order to get me to write more than a couple of sentences to count the day towards my five days. So this week, I’m going to try to write about what I’m learning from the Lord one day and about my dreams for the next year one day. We’ll see if having something specific to write about will help me put a few more words on the page.

This week is going to be extra hard though, because, as I mentioned, I’m going on a cruise with some girlfriends at the end of the week. I don’t see journaling happening at night, so I will plan to write in the mornings. Maybe that will help me make it happen.

Thanks to all the ladies going through this journey together! Because of you all and my fear of not accomplishing my goal publicly, I might actually start a habit of journaling!

Makeup Monday: Inspiration

I’m leaving for a cruise with some of my work girlfriends on Thursday and we are excited about some theme nights we’ve come up with for our nights on the boat. Little Black Dress Night, Sequins and Metallics Night, Sex and the City Night and, my personal fave, Disney Princess Night! The idea is that we don’t take the last two too literally, but just put our little twist on them. I’m hoping to get some good photos to share on the blog next week.

But, I’ve been doing some research on which makeup looks I should pair with them. You so very rarely get to have a night where you’re in costume and can do whatever you want with your face. So I want to take advantage of it! I’m thinking Look 1 for Little Black Dress Night, Look 2 for Sequins and Metallics Night, Look 4 for Disney Princess Night and either Look 3 or Look 5 for Sex and the City Night. Of course I’m going with the classic Carrie Bradshaw in Tulle outfit:

High Five for Friday and Favorites!

1. Went with my sister-in-law-to-be to see her try on her wedding dress Saturday. She is going to be a stunning bride!

2. Saw Breakfast at Tiffany’s at the Fox Theater with some of my faves. Hard to beat a day like that. If you haven’t watched that movie since you were a young girl, I think you should give it another whirl. It’s a little deeper than you may have originally thought.

3. The sun finally came out today. It’s pretty crazy that you feel the need to capture evidence that the sun came out in Georgia in August.

4. Went to Antico last night. Normally people go for the authentic Italian pizza. But since we can’t afford those amenities this weekend, we ate beforehand and brought our own vino. The point, you ask? To see precious friends in town from Switzerland! #winning

This is one of my admittedly less interesting weeks in photos. But I’m kind of thankful for that, you know? Means I got some rest in there somewhere.

J. Crew Factory Wishlist

It’s no secret that I love J. Crew Factory. And they have an amazing new collection right now that I am just loving!

I would really like to take every one of these home with me. But if I had to pick only three, I think I’d get the gold link necklace, the gold stud earrings, and the pink pencil pants.

And these two weekend outfits. Dy-ing.

Working Lady Style: Stripes & Glitter

August 22, 2013 § Leave a comment

IMG_9699As you know by now, I love adding a little fun to the traditionally boring corporate attire. Two of my favorite ways to bring in some flair are stripes and glitter!

This outfit is one of my favorite go-tos because it’s professional enough for work, but doesn’t feel constricting and still incorporates a huge amount of my personality. I actually wore this Monday, came home and changed, and then put it back on to go to a dinner later that night. You don’t really do that with a traditional suit, do you??

Outfit 1It consists of:

The shirt is from J. Crew Factory and has a nice, boxy shape to it, which I like when it’s tucked in. There’s a similar sleeveless version here.

IMG_9689The skirt is actually from Forever 21 {there’s a similar style here in a brighter color}. It’s a loose A-line that hits a little above the knee. The combination of the shirt tucked into the higher-waisted skirt is a little reminiscent of 90s style… and I don’t hate it.

IMG_9690The belt is from J. Crew Factory also and is one of my favorite accessories! It is such a small part of the outfit, but packs a lot of punch. A belt is also a good way to tip-toe into some more fun outfits at work. Try it out in a pop of color {like this one!}, or with some glitter or a pattern and see how you feel!

IMG_9687The shoes are just simple nude pumps from Target. Nude pumps are one of the most important staples in the working lady’s closet. They go with relatively everything, elongate the leg, and are very elegant. I mean Kate Middleton rocks them out regularly, so you know they’re good.

Accessories are the cherry on top of this sweet little outfit. The earrings are from Target, the watch is Michael Kors {my husband’s amazing Christmas present to me last year}, and the necklace is {shockingly} Charlotte Russe. A lot of women feel the need to perfectly match their jewelry: silver with silver, small with small, round with round. But I’m here to say it’s more fun when you mix it up! I love pairing silver and gold, diamonds with costume jewelry, and multiple colors. This is something you will get better at with practice. But start venturing down that path, and I think you’ll be surprised at how your jewelry box opens up a new world of combinations for you to try!

I hope these posts are helpful as you start trying to expand your working wardrobe. It’s fun to share!!
