Loving Lately: Ellie Holcomb

January 11, 2014 § Leave a comment

Have any of you ever heard of Drew Holcomb & The Neighbors? They’ve been featured on tons of television shows and were even the featured song for the 2012 NBA season intro that they played over and over and over that year.

Well Drew’s wife, Ellie, who is also part of the band, is branching out on her own and creating her first full-length album this year. No offense to Drew, because I do love his music, but oh Ellie! She’s one of a few different artists that have been an answer to prayer for me and probably several others. We’ve been in need of beautiful singers telling the story of the Gospel through beautiful lyrics. And Ellie does just that.

I have had her two EPs, Magnolia and With You Now, on repeat for the past few weeks and they are filled to the brim with truth and beautiful melodies. Per Wednesday’s post, I have been in serious need of the reminders of God’s faithfulness, love and compassion towards us.  These lyrics have been like salve on a wound for me, and I think they would be to most women going through a difficult time.

The most precious song of hers to me is With You Now. The sweetest line of all is:

When you sing your sad songs, I will learn the words and sing along.

Give it a listen and fall in love with her as much as I have. You can preorder her new album, As Sure As the Sun, on iTunes after your inevitable obsession begins.

High Five for Friday and Favorites!

1. For Joel’s 30th birthday, I created a photo book filled with photos and notes from family and friends that are dear to us. It was really amazing to have such a tangible example of how loved he is. I highly recommend this as a gift for someone for a milestone celebration! In this particular photo, he’s just come across the page from one of his twin brothers. In it is a photo of his brother dressed up as “The Ocean” for Halloween one year. Priceless.

2. On Saturday, we had his birthday party at his parents house and had yard games, football watching and BBQ throughout the day. The highlight was his two birthday cakes made by both of our parents. It’s hard to put into words just how thankful I am for him, and for the community we’re so blessed to be a part of. To have over 30 people drive from all over to come celebrate him was so touching. We just have so much to be thankful for.

3. My sister-in-law, Kat (wife of “The Ocean”), had her second baby shower on Sunday. She’s 31 weeks along, due on Christmas Eve with little baby Laney Harris! This will be our first niece (we don’t have any nephews either) and we are so excited to meet the little munchkin. She will be the best little Christmas gift ever!

(These favorites have been piling up over the last several weeks when I haven’t had a favorites post. So some are a little old. But I hope you enjoy!)

Loving Lately: Claudia Mejerle

October 23, 2013 § Leave a comment

So remember that time I posted about Amy Osaba, the floral designer? I haven’t spotlighted someone I’m loving lately, so I thought I would bring that back.

Claudia Mejerle is an up-and-coming Atlanta makeup artist, who happens to be a friend of mine {I’m pretty proud of that fact!}. She left her corporate job in 2010 to start her own business, pursuing her passion of making ladies look lovely, which she often found translates to an inner confidence. Ever since setting out on her own, we have watched her become a snowball of success! A staple in the Atlanta wedding circuit, she has really become the most prominent makeup artist in our sweet city.

Possessing an amazing grace that puts people right at ease, and pairing that with a flawless taste level, she ends up making every woman look like exactly what they’d hoped for, but may not have been able to put their finger on. Just last week, I sat in on my soon-to-be sister-in-law’s trial run and was in awe of how she nailed looks on the first try with three very picky females. They were all glowing. It was magical.

I am extremely excited to have her “do me up” for Carrie’s wedding in December and will most definitely post a picture of the final product when the wedding photos are in!

1. Went with my sister-in-law-to-be to see her try on her wedding dress Saturday. She is going to be a stunning bride!

2. Saw Breakfast at Tiffany’s at the Fox Theater with some of my faves. Hard to beat a day like that. If you haven’t watched that movie since you were a young girl, I think you should give it another whirl. It’s a little deeper than you may have originally thought.

3. The sun finally came out today. It’s pretty crazy that you feel the need to capture evidence that the sun came out in Georgia in August.

4. Went to Antico last night. Normally people go for the authentic Italian pizza. But since we can’t afford those amenities this weekend, we ate beforehand and brought our own vino. The point, you ask? To see precious friends in town from Switzerland! #winning

This is one of my admittedly less interesting weeks in photos. But I’m kind of thankful for that, you know? Means I got some rest in there somewhere.

It’s no secret that I love J. Crew Factory. And they have an amazing new collection right now that I am just loving!

I would really like to take every one of these home with me. But if I had to pick only three, I think I’d get the gold link necklace, the gold stud earrings, and the pink pencil pants.

And these two weekend outfits. Dy-ing.

1. If you live in or around the Atlanta area, you must run over to Heirloom Market BBQ immediately.  Sitting at the end of a convenient store, it doesn’t look like much — just like it’s missing the gas pumps. But the food – er mer gerd. It’s barbecue with a Korean twist. And it is so gooooood. My personal favorite {shown here} is the pulled pork sandwich with the side of mac-n-cheese. This stuff is basically shell pasta with melted pimento cheese. Hallelujah! Go there. Now.

2. I got my hair cut on Saturday. There was a Scout Mob for James Madison Hair, which is walking distance from my house. So I had to check it out. Not only were they able to fit me in at the last minute, but they also gave out free mimosas and neck massages. Sold. I cut off 7 inches, so I’m still getting used to it. But overall, I think I like it!

3. Saturday night, we went out with my best friends from college at a dueling piano bar. It was so much fun to see them and just spend time together. We’re all so busy these days and one of us just had a baby — so seeing each other can be difficult.

4. I love this Kristen Wiig quote. And I just love Kristen Wiig. One of my FAVORITE things to read about are other peoples’ success stories. How they had a dream and they worked really, really hard to accomplish it because they loved it. I realize not all of us will get to do this, but I still love hearing about those who do!

5. Pretty green door in NYC. I’m 99% sure that I now want to paint my future front door Kelly Green. So lovely. This picture also stands for the awesomeness that was the New York City day trip.

6. I have been reading Jesus Calling since the new year started. I am not one for devotionals, normally finding them hit or miss. But this has truly been the most incredible God-send this year. Every day is filled with wisdom and grace. Truly, every time I read it, I am incredibly blessed and encouraged by the truth that fills the page. Highly recommend it.

I hope you have an incredible weekend!! We’re going to spend time with Joel’s family in Madison, purchase my bridesmaid dress for our brother and sister-in-law’s wedding, and hopefully hold my dear friend’s little boy for the first time!

1. Have you ever heard of Creative Mornings? It’s this incredible free monthly event for creatives from cities across the world to come together and hear from inspiring speakers on a variety of different topics. Last Friday, my friend Anna invited me to go with her and it was incredible! Smith Hanes talked about the fantastic spaces he has designed over the years in the Atlanta area. They haven’t uploaded the video of his speech yet, but you should keep checking back because it was pretty great. In the meantime, this is a fun one to watch. Thankful for opportunities like this one!

2. Saturday was a blast celebrating my friend Cason’s birthday with several other friends, including Tresa here! These ladies are nonstop fun. We must have burned 1,000 calories dancing the night away!

3. You heard all about my new fave nail polish earlier this week. But it had to make the list. I just love looking down at beautifully painted nails. Makes my whole work week better.

4. I got to go to the Braves game with my sister and parents while Joel was out of town. It’s crazy how much of our life we’ve lived in that stadium. So many life memories, so much change. I mean, this was the place I had my first hot dog and blew my first bubble. You know that movie, One Day? I bet our family could do a movie like that about going to this stadium that would show such interesting growth over the years.

5. I love surprise gifts from friends just because. A beautifully-wrapped journal. I die.

6. Thankful beyond words that I genuinely adore the people I get to work with. A night of drinks and snacks on an open air patio does the soul good.
